How about going for a walk on the North or South Downs? But at this time of year it’s dark, which isn’t a problem if you have a torch!
We will look to help you improve your navigation whether you are a complete beginner never having been out walking in the dark or looking to fine tune your night time navigation, possibly in a more challenging environment.
- Which path do you take to get yourself back to your car?
- How do you know which bearing to take from the map?
- How long will it take to get back home?
Evening navigation

Dusk to dawn challenge!
We will meet at dusk (or as soon as you can make it after dusk) and walk through to dawn! Simple eh? Along the way we will stop for a hot drink (or two) and some food. You will get to walk as far or short as you want (usually somewhere between 15 and 30Km).
I have a degree in cartography (making maps!) and worked for a publishing house as a Cartographic Designer. I have passed navigation assessments for my Summer and Winter Mountain Leader’s award and Mountain Instructor Award.
I am a course provider for the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) and have run a number of days and weekends teaching young people (and adults!) how to navigate better.
Please do contact me if you would like more information, even if you would like an afternoon in preparation for your Lowland Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader or Mountain Leader assessment.
